The Fire Next Time

(Angela Davis)

116 x 89

Acrylic & Collage on Canvas

Angela Davis once banished, hunted down and condemned by the establishment is now revered as an intellectual and forceful voice for woman’s rights and black emancipation. She could, just as easily have been dispatched in her youth as her companion in arms, George Jackson was. She was forced into internal exile, underground, to survive. The title of this work is taken from the eponymous novel by James Baldwin. It is my way of suggesting the convergence of different struggles.
