CURRENTLY

A COCK-AND-BULL SHOW

from Tobias Verhaecht to Fred Bervoets

August 31 to October 19, 2024

Conceived as a visual feast in the spirit of Michael Winterbottom’s groundbreaking film A Cock and Bull Story (2005), this unexpected exhibition brings together works by major artists from 12 countries, with a special focus on Belgium.

The starting point for this show is the “first-time” presentation of a painting which has only recently returned to Belgium after years (if not centuries) in Italy. A typical mountainous landscape with pilgrims, this work by Tobias Verhaecht (Belgium, 1561-1631), the first teacher of Pieter Paulus Rubens, gracefully incorporates the Italian landscape tradition. The show gathers several other Belgian and British landscapes from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Landscapes then slowly drift into more abstraction with works by Chan Ky-Yut (China, 1940-2021) and Daryl Hill (Australia, 1930-1999).

Avant-garde compositions by James Brown (USA, 1951) and James Coignard (France, 1925-2008) make place for figuration to take the central role, with works by groundbreaking artists including Damien Hirst (UK, 1965), Nan Goldin (USA, 1953), Floris Jespers (Belgium, 1889-1965), Roger-Edgar Gillet (France, 1924-2004) , Faisal Samra (Saudi Arabia, 1955), Jiri Kolar (Czech Republic, 1914-2002), Philippe Cognée (France, 1957), Fred Bervoets (Belgium, 1942) and many more.

A Cock and Bull Show breaks all structures to deliver a chaotic playground on which unique visual languages come together to exchange and merge, transcending genres, geographies, and time.
